Running is a great sport to do. It’s one of those physical activities that allows endorphins to be released in the brain which is like a natural happy drug!

But the issue that arrises with running is staying motivated when starting out. Typically if you skip a few days due to weather or whatever excuse you come up with, you lose all the progress you made and it’s almost like you have to start over.

Here are a few ways to keep yourself motivated to actually get out and run.

Register for a Race

If you have set a personal goal of being able to run a 5k, sign up for a race. When you have paid money for a race it will offer more motivation for actually getting out and training.

Track your progress with a fitness app such as Nike+ running. You know you have a deadline to meet, you can reach your goal!

Accountability

If you find yourself always making up excuses for not to run you need an accountability partner. Someone who will encourage you and make you get out and run with them.

A good place to start is the organization Black Girls Run! They have groups all over the nation comprised of women of color who value running.

Groups like these will help keep you motivated to get out and run. You don’t have to do it alone!

Reward Yourself

Having an incentive for yourself is always a good way to stay motivated. Go out and purchase a gift card to your favorite store and put it in an envelope. Tell yourself you aren’t allowed to open it until you reach a goal. I promise you will more inclined to reach your goal a little quicker.

Fun Running

I believe it is important to do some fun running in conjunction with it all that training. Sign up for a Color Run.

The Color Run is a 5k that’s not about finishing first. It’s about getting covered in about 6 different colors and having fun!

If you’re not already running, I suggest you start! Try the Couch to 5k app and you will be able to run a 5k in 8 weeks. It’s possible!

Get started today. All you need is a good pair of running shoes!
