If you’re a goddess, posing nude and dropping a new album is a great way to get attention. This time though it’s not just about acquiring money or fame like your typical celebrity. Alicia Keys is using her considerable talents and beauty to bring awareness to her charitable foundation that strives to tackle worldwide social, cultural and spiritual issues with her “We Are Here” movement.
With so many media outlets and constant bombardment of information these days you’ve got to do something extraordinary if you want to get people’s attention. Alicia feels so strongly about her cause that she was willing to bare all to get her point across and you better believe it worked; the songstress looks simply stunning in all her baby bump glory!
The peace sign is also a great touch as it’s universally recognizable and encapsulates much of what Keys aims to accomplish with the new initiative-making the world a better and more peaceful place.
Alicia herself said it best:
“It’s time to get people’s attention,” she said. “People won’t be able to ignore this visual.”
In fact, the “We Are Here” movement has become a social media sensation with a ton of celebrities lending their support to generate buzz about the new initiative. Big names like Jennifer Lopez, Pharell, Jimmy Fallon and a slew of others have taken to social media to get things rolling.
Some critics may denounce using a nude picture as a distraction or publicity stunt to get your point across, but when done right for the right reasons even the most cynical viewpoints have little room for argument. What are those naysayers doing to save world anyway? Oh, nothing? That’s what I thought.
It’s refreshing to say the least to see a superstar use her celebrity and notoriety for completely altruistic reasons and help people, rather than stump about their political views or aggrandizing themselves to feed their over-sized egos.
So what is the “We Are Here” movement anyway?
The program is hugely ambitious and aims to take on vital issues concerning social justice causes, stricter gun laws, criminal justice reform, LGBT rights and global girls’ education. In addition Alicia is putting where her mouth is by donating $1 million of her own money, to be divided among the 12 charitable groups.
Not only does Alicia want to tackle problems like those that affect day to day life, she’s also trying to get people to question their own role as a human being and what that truly entails:Why are we here? What are we meant to do? How can the world be made a better place?
After performing her new song “We Are Here,” on the Today Show, the singer explained during her interview with Matt Lauer how she wants to take her music in different directions to address racism, injustice, and poverty.
“I really just want this song to be the dialogue that starts to ask ourselves, ‘Why are we here? What are we here to do?’” “Because if we can start that dialogue with ourselves, then that can start the bigger conversation about how we can actually bring change to the world.”
Alicia is certainly shooting for the stars with this massive effort and should be applauded for her extraordinary humanitarian efforts as well as taking a substantial risk with the nude photo. So far “We Are Here” has been a smashing success and is showing no signs of slowing down with fans and celebrity friends doing what they can to make a difference.
