Being a successful career woman doesn’t have to be hard. Tyra Banks has worn multiple hats and she recently sat down with Glamour magazine earlier this month and shared some of her top career advice for the working woman.
1. Educate yourself
“CL: You graduated from a program at Harvard Business School in 2012. What made you decide to go?
TB: Tyra Beauty. But I just couldn’t tell anybody! I knew that I wanted to have a self-funded company—I’m obsessed with ownership. I want to have the say, not just a say. So I needed to have the tools.”
Whatever you passion may be, make sure you get educated and equip yourself with the proper tools to be successful. Even if you have been in your company or field for a while, be sure to stay up to date with the current literature or take on a new challenge to move up within the company.
Or if you’re looking to become an entrepreneur, be sure to read up on all the important information on starting a business or consider taking business classes.
2. Have money of your own
“My mom stayed with my dad for too long because of financial reasons. If she’d just had a little side hustle, a little of her own money, she would have left. So I encourage women to have what I call “F.U.” money.… A lot of my passion for this business comes from that.”
Don’t ever put yourself in a situation where you have to stay stuck and can’t get out because of your financial circumstances.
Have a side hustle. Be an entrepreneur. With the numbers of African American women entrepreneurs peaking charts you don’t have an excuse! Figure out what you love and get out there.
If things go sideways you can easily say F.U. and leave without worry because you have a nice nest egg.
This doesn’t only go for relationships, it can apply to your 9-5 as well. Have a lucrative side hustle so that you’re not a slave to anyone. From personal experience of being laid off I’ve learned that having multiple streams of income so that I’m not dependent on anyone or any job is vital.
3. Take some time for yourself
“Take some time for yourself. You’re still gonna be successful if you go on that vacation. “
Overworking yourself won’t get you anywhere. If you’re burnt out you definitely won’t do your best.
Taking breaks is essential for a healthy mind and a healthy lifestyle. Take a vacation, get away and clear your mind without thinking about work. You deserve it! When you come back to work you will be refreshed and will do most likely do twice a better job than you would have without the break.
It’s no secret Tyra is a BOSS and lots can be learned from her.
