Sleep is a very important thing, yet a lot of people don’t sleep well. One thing that sleep affects is the way you look. If you care about fighting the signs of premature aging and want to look your best, start taking control of your sleep.

3 Beauty benefits of a good night’s sleep

1. Collagen Production

A lot happens when you sleep, and one of those things deals with collagen. This is something your body produces to help repair your skin, making it look youthful and healthy. It is made during the night to help your skin fight the damage it sustained during the day. The problem is, if you don’t sleep much, you’ll be making less collagen, and this could lead to premature aging.

Quick tip: here’s why you should never sleep in your makeup.

2. Increase blood flow

Another thing that should be pointed out is that blood flow is increased to your skin while you sleep. This helps collagen take care of your skin, but it also promotes that healthy glow you see on your skin sometimes, making you look youthful and radiant. When you lose sleep, that is when you start seeing signs of deprivation, which can include skin that has a dull or lifeless appearance.

3. Decrease dark circles under your Eyes

When you don’t get enough sleep, you will not only sacrifice those rosy cheeks many want, but you are also reducing the chances of your eyes glowing or having a bright appearance. The lack of sleep could make it harder for your eyes to get all the nutrients and vitamins it needs to feel and look healthy. The stress you put on your eyes by staying up too long could cause you to develop bags under your eyes.

I am loving the Calm app for the sleep stories.  The sleep stories are so much more interesting and my concentration is no longer on noises around me.

Of course, you’ll want to turn off your phone or mute it when you are going to sleep.  If you are using an app like calm, just download the sleep story offline and turn your phone to airplane mode.  There’s nothing worse than getting your beauty sleep interrupted by a spam email.

 2. Light

Light is another thing that might be affecting you when you try to sleep. Your body’s melatonin levels are affected by light. Melatonin is a neurotransmitter responsible for all sorts of things, including drowsiness and the ability to have a good night’s sleep. If you ensure there are no artificial lights on and have black out curtains, then you should have a better chance of falling asleep.

Using an app light flux on your computer or blue light filter glasses can reduce your exposure to harmful blue light from your computer or cell phone during the day.   Studies found that participants had a 58% increase in their nighttime melatonin levels.

3. Temperature

Now, you are also going to have to work on the temperature in your room. Melatonin is highly sensitive to the temperature in your room. Too hot and you end up tossing and turning, so it needs to be cool enough for your body to release as much melatonin as possible.

The ideal temperature is 67 degrees, but you can try temperatures near that number until you feel comfortable. If you have tried everything and still need help falling or staying asleep, try adding a natural sleep aid like a CBD melatonin tincture or an over the counter remedy.

These are just some things you can do to sleep as much as possible. Falling asleep is only half the battle.
