Have you heard of the recent Twitter movement through use of the hashtag #blkwomensyllabus? If not, it has been a phenomenal way to compile a list of resources and books every Black woman should read.

In the wake of police brutality towards women of color, such as 21-year-old Charnesia Corley being violated and molested on June 21st by police officers claiming to have been in search of marijuana in her vagina, #blkwomensyllabus was created.

The hashtag was started by Daina Ramey Berry, Ph.D., a University of Texas at Austin history professor, who felt it important to highlight the intellectual power black women have.

She started tweeting many book titles that black women may not be aware of and should definitely read.

Other contributions to the list have been made by additional scholars, historians, writers, editors and more.

The list includes titles covering topics of history, health and disability studies and even poetry.  Our list below is according to  For Harriet.

In addition to the hashtag created on the social media network, a Wikipedia page was also created to compile the growing list. It is organized based on region of the World, century, topics and journals.

Many would say that a lot of the titles on the list should be required reading for women of color. It is essential to strengthen the intellectual power black women hold.

While creating the #blkwomensyllabus was important to identify books we should read and share them through social media, it is essential that we actually READ these books! Reading is so fundamental. A lot of these books I actually have never even heard of so I will definitely be choosing a few to add on to my 2015 reading list!
