News broke that 68 year old pop star and actress Cher, is being sued by her former choreographer and backup dancers on the grounds of wrongful dismissal owing to racial discrimination.
Ex-choreographer Kevin Wilson, has alleged that in her most recent tour “Dressed to Kill”, she complained that her stage had “too much color” after he told her there was a dancer he wanted to add to the production. It is alleged that she went further to say he must find a dancer who is white and blonde.
Wilson along with Suzanne Easter and Jacquelyn Dowsett Ballinger were fired in July after allegedly complaining to managers that another dancer had assaulted an unidentified woman while on the tour. The lawsuit reportedly states that the dancers were told that they were fired to save costs on the tour.
Cher’s publicist, Liz Rosenburg, has rubbished the claims; while Perry C Wander, attorney to the dancers has stated that he believes the claims have merit since they are made by persons who have been working with Cher for over a decade.
Now let me ease slowly into this one. I am not sure who to believe. If you’ve been working for her for over ten years how come you’re just filing a lawsuit? Was there nothing that hinted she might be racist (and why would you want to continue to work for someone who is racist anyway)? Then again, after ten years you are just figuring out that your back-up dancers are black? Something just isn’t adding up here.
Now I’ve been assessing things and I’ve come to accept that once you work for someone else you are a liability; they can decide that your post is no longer needed or they want to go with something fresh or any number of other reasons. The thing is that after a ten year working relationship, I’d hope to be offered some kind of notice or something.
Another thing, they were only fired after complaining about a fellow dancer who had abused a woman? You’d think that’s something honorable, not something to be fired for. Who is the mystery dancer anyway? Could it be that “fired to save cost on the tour” means that too much bad publicity would come from it leaking that one of Cher’s dancers is going about assaulting women, so it’s better to keep it under wraps?
Hmm! just can’t figure this one out. When you think of it, old people are know to not be to diplomatic as they advance in years. I guess it comes with feeling entitled to speak your mind cause you paid your dues.
If she did say it we’ll know in he end cause these things have a way of playing out. If she didn’t and they’re just trying to collect cause their high profile job is no more, I guess we’ll see that too. The only thing I’m sure of is that it’s mighty fishy!
