If you think Africa is the last place for blacks to be discriminated again, think again. A Chinese restaurant in Nairobi, Kenya has come under fire for their “No Africans” policy. Basically, they don’t allow any blacks in their restaurant after 5p.m.
When confronted about the restaurant’s actions, co-owner Esther Zhao defended herself by claiming that Africans pose a security risk and it was necessary to keep them out after 5p.m. According to her, any black person can be an Al Shabaab member (that’s a Somali terrorist group), so the best choice, for her, was to lock out all potential terrorists.
We don’t admit Africans that we don’t know because you never know who is al-Shabaab and who isn’t…It is not like it is written on somebody’s face that they are a thug armed with a gun.”
Zhao admitted that the restaurant had been robbed last year by black thugs who entered disguised as patrons. After that, she decided that all blacks were potential robbers, so she chose to lock them out.
The only blacks allowed after 5p.m. are “loyal” African patrons, taxi drivers and Africans who are accompanied by Indian, Chinese or white patrons. Even the African journalists who went to interview the owners were initially denied entrance for arriving after 5p.m.
The restaurant has caused an uproar on Twitter, with enraged Kenyans calling for blood using hashtags like #RacistRestaurant and #NoBlacksAllowed. A lot of people demanded that the owners get deported.
In an interesting twist, the restaurant has already been closed, but not for the reason you might think. The owners apparently didn’t have licenses for liquor, health and change-of-use, so the Nairobi County governor promptly closed it down. This is obviously a response to their racist actions, because no one was interested in their lack of a license before the news broke.
The restaurant owner has since issued a press statement, where he says the restaurant has never and will never discriminate against anyone, and that their actions are just a misunderstanding.
Like with other African countries, there has been an influx of Chinese workers into Kenya over the past few years. Now that they are starting to get settled, it’s a little disconcerting that some of them are acting like they are back in China and that all blacks are potential criminals.
What do you think should happen to the restaurant owners?
