Is washing clothes a woman’s job? This clothing company sure seems to think so. Salvo Sports, a sportswear company based in Indonesia, has come into the world’s attention for printing sexist jokes onto the washing labels of all their shirts.
After the usual set of cleaning instructions, they added two lines which claimed that washing clothes is really a woman’s job and the owner of the shirt should give it to one.
On jerseys, they simply skipped the instructions and went straight to instructing the owner of the jersey to give it to their woman, because “it’s her job”.
Naturally, this elicited outrage from the internet as soon as the story emerged. Twitter was especially active, with plenty of users shaming the store for their shameless insult. Some called the company owner(s) idiots, while others said this was an epic fail.
The company obviously realized they had set off a land mine and had to make amends before it started to affect their sales, so they issued an apology on Twitter.
However, they didn’t admit to being sexist and ask to ask to put things in the past, maybe even offer a discount or two to show they really aren’t that bad. Instead, they tried to justify their action, assuming the rest of the world is made of Neanderthals.
“The message is simply, instead of washing it in the wrong way, you might as well give it to a lady because they are more capable.
“There is no intention to humiliate women. In contrast [men should] learn from women how to take care of clothes.”
Needless to say, they just shot themselves in the foot. They have shown exactly what they think women are good for, and they aren’t afraid to stand up for their sexist beliefs.
In a time when equality is everyone’s responsibility, the men at Salvo Sports have taken us back decades. This also shows that the environment in Indonesia might not be all that conducive towards women, if a major clothing company can be this openly sexist.
It is essential that we take action against the company. Simply boycotting their products is a good enough way to show them that we are not living in the middle ages. If they lose their profits, they will have to acknowledge that their sexist joke is anything but funny.
What do you think should happen to them?
