Well Twitter is about to get a little bit more diverse! According to Forbes:

Debra Lee, the chairman and CEO of BET, the parent company of Black Entertainment Television, has joined Twitter’s TWTR +0.35% board of directors, the San Francisco, Calif.-based company said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange commission on Monday.

“Thrilled to be joining the @twitter board,” the cable TV executive said in a tweet on Monday. “It’s transformed the media and the world like few other things in history (and continues to)!!” The executive chairman of Twitter’s board, former Google GOOGL -1.35% executive Omid Kordestani, also tweeted about the board’s addition, welcoming Lee.

Lee has served as BET’s CEO for about a decade. Before joining BET, which is now owned by Viacom VIAB +0.23%, Lee spent five years as an attorney at Washington, D.C.-based Steptoe & Johnson. Among other awards, she won the Vanguard Award from the National Cable & Telecommunications Association in 2003 and the Woman of the Year Award from Women in Cable and Telecommunications in 2001. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Brown University, a master’s from Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and a law degree from Harvard.

Since Twitter’s CEO Jack Dorsey took the helm, the company has been working to revamp its board and boost its diversity. Lee’s appointment suggests that Dorsey, who is also CEO of payments company Square, is following through.
