Racism comes in many forms, and a school in Denver has just shown us one more. Since the beginning of the year, the Martin Luther King Jr. Early College put out a poster detailing “101 Things Black and Latina Girls Should Know”.
There are positive messages about girls not letting anyone put them down based on their color, size or cultural difference. However, these messages are largely forgotten as most of the 101 messages are inherently racist.
No school should tell its female students that they look like a clown if they apply too much makeup, or that they should hold an actual book and not a Kindle because they should remember how far “black and brown people” have come. Even worse, telling girls that grinding and twerking aren’t cute, because a girl’s goal in life should be cuteness.
Young women need positive messages to help them feel good about themselves in a white-dominated society that’s also misogynistic.
The staff at the ironically names Martin Luther King Jr. Early College only did more harm than good when veiling positive messages with racist insults, like saying a girl has value and her potential is limitless (unless she has a baby; then she’s screwed).
It’s a wonder that this thing is only now coming to light, considering the poster’s been around since the start of the year.
This is the kind of thing that should get the responsible staff members fired–all of them. Teachers are meant to be responsible adults who educate and mentor students, and show them that the world isn’t as intimidating as they might think.
The messed up teachers in this school, though, took it to themselves to show young colored girls that being born anything other than a white male is a big no-no.
This isn’t even the first time the staff have been openly racist without consequences. They also created a poster targeting young black men, called “101 Things Every Young Man of Color Should Know”.
It contains stereotypical messages like telling young black men there are easier ways they can make money than rapping or playing professional sports.
Many of the students in this school are colored, so it’s no surprise that they complained about it and even alerted news channels.
The school has been forced to take the posters down, and the school district has now announced that it’s reviewing the situation. They really should fire everyone who had a hand in making those posters, and ensure they never get hired anywhere else.
