2014’s list of the highest musicians is out, and a lot of people on the list are the usual suspects. What’s most interesting is who topped the list: Dr. Dre. The rapper, producer and businessman made over $620 million before taxes.
That’s right: in one year, he’s made more than most musicians make in their lifetime. Most of the cash came from Dre’s sale of Beats to Apple for $3 billion.
Not bad for a hip hop legend who once rapped about people forgetting about him. This is good news to Dre fans everywhere, because it’s always good to see a talented guy prosper. Dre has always been one of the best rappers and producers in the industry, and with Beats, he’s shown that Diddy and Jay Z aren’t the only wealth-minded rappers around.
Dre isn’t just 2014’s highest earner in music; he’s also made the most massive single-year haul of any musician ever. Oh, and he’s also responsible for the widest margin between the highest and second-highest earners. The second-highest earner is Beyonce (surprise, surprise) and she made $115 million. Let me spell this out for you, dear reader: Dr. Dre made over half a billion more than Beyonce.
Maybe now he’s as minted as royalty and doesn’t have to work for the rest of his life, he can finally drop that Detox album.
The other people on the list won’t surprise you that much. Bey made second place because of her bestselling album, endorsements and her Mrs. Carter Show tour. Oh, and because she’s the Queen Bey.
Third on the list was The Eagles, whose History of the Eagles Tour earned them a crisp $100 million. Bon Jovi was fourth and Bruce Springsteen fifth, with $82 million and $81 million respectively. They earned most of their cash from arena tours. Diddy, Bruno Mars and Jay Z had to share the same spot because they all made $60 million.
I highly doubt Dr. Dre will top the list again (not for a few years, at least) so next year the competition will likely be tighter.
