It seems that Mariah Carey is singing the blues this Christmas. As she performed at her annual 80 minute Beacon Theater show in New York on December 15, 2014, she was seen trying to remain composed as she wiped tears during her performance.
Sources present say she looked to be in a reflective mood as she belted out its from her Christmas albums and crooned to a jolly Santa bearing gifts for the children (lucky fella).
That wasn’t the only observation that was made of her performance though, as critics said she struggled to nail her trademark high notes and in some cases failed altogether.
The New York Post reportedly commented that she:
“killed the crowd’s ears”; this after raw feed of her singing without accompaniment and backup was leaked on YouTube and Gawker saying she “accidentally left her voice at home.”
Well as a die hard fan I am coming to her defense. Where is the humanity? Now holidays, especially Christmas, can be difficult for many people.
Throw in a highly publicized breakup in which the ex is reportedly “saved” (ouch Nick Canon) from you and anyone would get a little teary eyed. Man! The irony of TVJ’s Smile Jamaica morning show playing her “All I want for Christmas is You” and “I Miss You Most at Christmas Time” singles right after interviewing her ex-husband Nick Cannon on December 16th.
It has just been a bad year for the powerhouse singer. A breakup by itself can be a bitch without all the hype and the entire globe poking a nose in your business.

Can you imagine what it is like for her? We don’t know the exact details or cause of the breakup – and it’s just as well- but there could be so much more under the surface that she is struggling with. I don’t think anyone goes into a marriage for it to end in divorce, so I think for her to lose her partner at this time has got to be real shitty. She is not made of stone and is entitled to a cry albeit a public one.
As for the quality of her voice, I can see how people may be disappointed that she doesn’t sound as good as she did two decades ago but come on people; this woman can still sing.
I believe anyone who fancies him/her self a singer has tried the Mariah scream at least once (I know I did). It doesn’t take any ordinary set of lungs to nail that, I can tell you that much, and after some twenty years some wear and tear on the voice can be expected.
Get real, in the latter years not even Whitney Houston sounded as crisp as she did in the 90s. She’s had years of touring, recording and live shows; give the woman a break! She is aging and that is what happens with age.
Let’s not forget that this is a woman who has been giving us timeless hits for years. In the spirit of kindness and the goodwill that should accompany the season, lay off a bit. Rather, let’s hope she rallies and finds prosperity love and happiness for the new year.
