We haven’t heard much about the story where 200 Nigerian girls were kidnapped by Boko Haram an Islamic insurgent group with ties to Al Quaeda.
The girls were stolen from a Government Secondary School in Chibok and the ordeal caused quite a stir on social media with celebrities showing their support, blog commentary and individual posts on all platforms, but now, much like yesterdays news the story has fizzled away.
For one Nigerian girl it hasn’t though, Nigerian Pop singer Adokiye pictured above, in a recent interview admitted that she would give her virginity for the return of the girls in mid April.
“This is 11 p.m. in the night and do you know what I am thinking about? Those little girls, where they are and what could be happening to them. It is just unfair. They are too young. I wish I could offer myself in exchange,”
“They are between 12 and15 year old girls for Christ sake. I am older and more experienced. Even if 10 to 12 men have to take me every night, I don’t care. Just release these girls and let them go back to their parents.”
Of course twitter went HAM on her gesture calling it a cry for attention and not knowing much about the songstress all I can say is its working.
The point is the girls are still missing, so whether its some cry for attention publicity stunt type stuff, it just reminded me personally of the women still living in captivity.
It reminds me that modern day slavery still exists and people who have power can exercise that power over the others, taking their rights and dehumanizing them everyday.
The goal of the hash tag #bringbackourgirls was basically for awareness but it doesn’t or wont physically bring back the girls. I doubt twittersphere can scare a terrorist into submission. IJS
This entire thing is very political, I am inclined to think that if the parents had the support of the Nigerian Government with fire power they could possibly make more of an impact.
When there is just nothing of substance being done you have to wonder who is paid off, who is a coward and who the real terrorists are.
In the meantime we tweet, and the girls continue to suffer – Good attempt Adokiye!
