ebola 3

Is Ebola dangerous? Of course it is. Is it a terrible tragedy that people have died from Ebola? Yes. Does it have to be taken seriously here in the U.S.? Yes, but let’s not get crazy. Do you have a better chance of getting struck by lightning five times in a row than contracting Ebola especially if you’re not treating someone known to have the virus? YES!!!

Once it seemed like fears were dying down, a doctor, Craig Spencer, who recently returned from Guinea has tested positive for Ebola marking the first case of the deadly virus in New York City and the fourth diagnosed in the United States. Let’s not forget he came directly from West Africa and did not contract the virus in the U.S.

Cable news for the most part has been blowing this “so-called” epidemic way out of proportion in the U.S. to “scare” up some ratings. The Ebola coverage really has been journalism at its worst. In case you haven’t been following the situation, one man from West Africa passed away in Dallas from the disease and two health care workers were in infected. One of which has now been declared Ebola-free after a plasma transfusion. Keep in mind, the two nurses were treating a man known to have Ebola and had direct contact with him. It’s not like they were just walking down the street and got infected.

Just from those incidents alone it seems the whole country has gone crazy. Blaming the government for improper quarantine techniques, calling for travel bans and more. Now political pundits are even saying Ebola will affect the mid-term elections because of the perception of poor government response.  The fact is sometimes shit happens and there’s no amount of preparedness that can do anything about it.

Let’s step back and think about this for a second. One of the biggest reasons for the mass hysteria surrounding Ebola is how familiar the name is with the general public. If was the same virus but was called something like “Virus X2128”, do you really think there would be so much uproar and media coverage about it?

Out of any virus it’s probably gotten the most coverage in news and fiction (movies like Outbreak). Let’s also to take into account how many movies and books have been based on pandemics like The Walking Dead, which also happens to be the most popular show on TV. The concept of a highly communicable disease taps a nerve with the American public that it has already been familiarized with through pop culture.

Ebola is still a problem in much of the world but steps can and have been taken to contain it. Nigeria, in West Africa where the virus originated, has already been declared Ebola free and they only have a smidgen of the resources of the U.S.

My guess is that this will all be forgotten within a month. The news really needs to get a hold of the ripples of fear they are creating in the public arena by making this a 24-hour story. If you walk out of the house and have fears of contracting Ebola you really need to rethink your mindset and not give into the fear mongering.

Here’s a few more reasons why Ebola is so hard to catch:
