Barbie revealed that they are honoring six ‘sheroes’ and they define sheroe as a woman who has inspired girls by “breaking boundaries and expanding possibilities for women everywhere.”
Ana Duvernay is the first black female director to be nominated for an Academy award for best picture.
In addition to that Ava founded the African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement that gives young and old film creators of color a chance to show case their work in ways they could never even imagined.
She is the epitome of Shero because she breaks boundaries for people of color who may have faced boundaries in the past with regards to being creative in film and directing.

“Barbie has always represented that girls have choices, and this Spring we are proud to honor six Sheroes who through their trade and philanthropic efforts are an inspiration to girls,” said Evelyn Mazzocco, General Manager Barbie. “Started by a female entrepreneur and mother, this brand has a responsibility to continue to honor and encourage powerful female role models who are leaving a legacy for the next generation of glass ceiling breakers.”
Mattel is not just creating dolls, they truly want to be a part of and create a Shero celebration with this collection.
