The controversial shooting of Ferguson teen Michael Brown still has far reaching effects as the town and country sit on a potential powder keg of outrage. The grand jury decision on whether or not to indict Officer Darren Wislon for his role in the shooting is expected to be handed down soon. Will he face criminal charges or not? No matter what the decision there is sure to be trouble in the Ferguson, MO area.

Unfortunately, division lines are already being drawn as both police and highly organized protest groups gear up for the decision.

In a pre-emptive and potentially incendiary move, Missouri governor Jay Nixon has declared a state of emergency and mobilized the National Guard to potentially stave off rioting and looting. Needless to say, that move doesn’t sit too well with organizers who plan to peacefully protest if the decision doesn’t go their way.

Things look grim as government officials seem to be preparing for the worst and they’ve even established a “Unified Command” command out of St. Louis to control unrest. It seems like someone might already know something if the state government is already taking these extraordinary mobilization measures. It’s not cheap to get the National Guard moving so it looks like we should expect a bombshell to hit this week. The story hasn’t gotten a ton of coverage in the news but that should change soon.

Conversely, it seems like professional protest groups are preparing to an equal degree. Many groups are offering comprehensive civil-disobedience training to prepare themselves for possible harsh conditions and practice de-escalation tactics. None of the protest groups want things to devolve into violence so there have been numerous church and community outreach groups promoting seminars to teach people their protesting rights and to practice “civil disobedience” instead of giving into anger and a mob mentality.

Enrollment at the training sessions has reportedly been filled to capacity with a diverse group of participants. It’s not just black people attending these meetings either. The Michael Brown shooting has become a focus point for racial tension and the militarization of our government to put down protests in our own country. This truly is a national problem and not just a black problem.

I can’t emphasize enough how this decision could pale in comparison to the Trevon Martin case. Activist groups are extremely organized and have even set up a national campaign, the Ferguson National Response Network. Once the decision is announced, subscribers will be alerted immediately which will surely illicit strong reaction nationwide one way or the other.

With social media coordination and organization by potential protesters and the unprecedented preparations the Missouri state government has made by already calling for a state-of-emergency, a major event with national implications could be at our doorstep.
