Ahmed Mohammed, a 14-year-old schoolboy at MacArthur High School in Texas, was arrested for making a homemade clock which his teachers mistook for a bomb. The teenager is a tech enthusiast, and he made a clock from scratch just to show his engineering teacher.
However, while in his bag, the clock made audible beeps which caught the attention of his English teacher. She told him to remove it, and on seeing it, said it looked like a bomb. So she told the principal, who called the police.
When the police came, it was racial profiling o’clock; they interrogated him and refused to believe Ahmed when he claimed his device was a watch and not a bomb.
The police cuffed him and sent Ahmed to a juvenile detention center, after the school suspended him for three days.
The internet soon learned about this, and in no time, thousands of people on social media showed their support for Ahmed, with the hashtag #IStandWithAhmed, and their disgust for the system.
High-profile persons also gave Ahmed their support. Hillary Clinton spoke against the assumption his teacher made, and urged Ahmed to keep building stuff. Mark Zuckerberg said the future belongs to people like Ahmed, and invited Ahmed to visit Facebook.
And President Barrack Obama praised the teenager’s clock and invited him to the White House. After this much backlash, the Texas police had to respond. And they did, by defending the arrest and insinuating they couldn’t be sure until they figured out for themselves that Ahmed’s clock was, indeed, a clock.
I say this is bull. If Ahmed had been white, his teachers would have oohed and aahed, and no one would have accused him of being a terrorist. But because he’s a Muslim, anything he makes is a bomb until proven otherwise–as the Texas police clearly demonstrated.
We have white kids walking around with guns and it’s okay. But with other races, anything that looks even remotely like a weapon is reason enough to detain and/or shoot them, no matter how young they are. Profiling has got to stop. Enough, already!
