The celebrity hacker strikes again! Gabrielle Union, Kim Kardashian and Rihanna are among the latest celebrities whose nude photos have been leaked online. The photos were posted on Reddit on Saturday. They were quickly removed. However, the damage was already done, and the images are now spreading like wildfire all over the internet.
The hacked photos include two pics of Rihanna, which were supposedly taken during one of the songstress’s fittings. Other celebrities who were targeted include Kaley Cuoco, Vanessa Hudgens, Hope Solo, Jennifer Lawrence (again) and Leelee Sobieski. Most of them haven’t commented on the leaks yet.
Well, except for Gabrielle Union. The actress has already contacted the FBI to look into the incident. Union also released a joint statement with husband Dwayne Wade.
“It has come to our attention that our private moments, that were shared and deleted solely between my husband and myself, have been leaked by some vultures.
I can’t help but to be reminded that since the dawn of time women and children, specifically women of color, have been victimized, and the power over their own bodies taken from them. These atrocities against women and children continue worldwide.”
Union makes a good point: women have been the subject of objectification for centuries, and especially women of color.
However, this is not one of those instances.
First of all, the hacker targeted women of all colors. So, if this is an act of discrimination, it’s discrimination against all women. Second, some of these hacked celebrities already have nude pics easily available through a simple Google search (I’m looking at you, Kim Kardashian and Rihanna). To celebrities like them, what’s the big deal? Anyone who’s interested has already seen them naked, so this won’t exactly make a difference in their lives.
For now, it seems there’s only one solution to protect yourself from nude hacks: stop taking nude photos! Hackers are at fault here, yes. But you shouldn’t give them what they want; only women who have never taken nude photos have ease of mind as they know these hacks will never affect them. Even if the authorities capture this hacker, there will definitely be others. Denying them access to what they want is the only sure way to stop them; anything else is just damage limitation.
