For the record, Gary did not care whether he was on the cover of Essence or not, but before I get into that let me share the back story. Essence magazine featured the guys of Think Like A Man Two, you know the movie with the grown little man? They had two covers, the guys on one issue and the women on another issue.
On the guys issue, Kevin Hart was on the cover, Michael Ealy made the cut, Terrence was on it, and Will Packer who did not quite make it to the cover the last time the movie was out. They left out one guy, Gary Owens, the white guy and well alot of people have alot to say about that.
Of course the commentary surrounds race and it was interesting to see what Gary had to say about being left out of the happy go lucky bunch?
“You know what, I didn’t even think nothing of it, until it got brought to my attention,”
” Like, the last movie was Micheal, Taraji and Kevin and that wasn’t a big deal, it just happened that they wanted five guys, and that’s the five they chose. I was fine with it because magazines know their readers better than I do. I didn’t look at it like a racial thing. I just looked at it like, ‘Okay, that’s who caters to their readers’. And I was happy that Will Packer got some shine because he’s the producer and some people were like ‘Why did Will Packer get on and not you or Jerry?’. Will Packer is the reason why all of this is happening so, for him to get a little shine, I’m all for it.”
I loved his response, I think Essence should have included him, but I don’t work there, at the end of the day it was a business decision and they know whats best for their magazine. Despite the way it all went down, I was happy with Gary’s gracious take on the whole scenario.
