Are you getting everything you need out of your skincare routine? Do your products leave your skin feeling too oily or too dry? Is your cleanser doing everything it’s supposed to? You might be missing some key steps in your daily regimen! Here are the 5 steps you should follow when taking care of your skin.

Cleanse

This one is a no-brainer. Everyone at least washes their face–even if it’s just with soap and water. What you may not have known, is that you should apply your cleanser in an upward circular motion.

Gravity pulls down on our skin, which causes it to sag, so we want to fight against it and apply our products in the opposite direction!

You also want to make sure that you’re drying your face with a white cloth or washcloth. Any other color has dye that will work against the cleansing job you just did!

Exfoliate

While most cleansers rid your face of all of the surface materials, they do not remove the dirt that is deep in your pores. Exfoliate takes care of this issue and also removes dead skin cells.

A lot of cleansers have exfoliating beads in them, so you can save a step by getting yourself a good-quality cleanser. Additonally, if you want spa-quality results every day, you may consider investing in a microdermabrasion set that both refines with exfoliating crystals and replenishes with a refreshing mask.

Tone and Tighten

After cleansing and exfoliating, which can be a little rough on your skin, you will need a toner to restore and repair its surface. A lot of sunscreens contain the ingredients necessary for this step.

Yes, even women of color need to wear a sunscreen every day to protect our face. For your nighttime regimen, instead of a sunscreen, you should find a product that is able to redeposit the nutrients that the environment takes out of your skin during the day. Look for products with vitamins and peptides to do the trick!

Moisturize

Everyone needs to moisturize their skin, whether it’s naturally oily or not. A good moisturizer will keep your skin hydrated for up to 12 hours! A friendly tip: when moisturizing, make sure to avoid underneath your eyes.

You don’t want the moisturizer to activate the glands under your eyes because if it does, your eyes will puff up!

Protect

Lastly, you will need to lock in all of these products and protect your skin from all of the particles that fly around in the air.

What a lot of women don’t realize is that foundation is supposed to be the last step of your skincare routine. It’s not makeup! Your foundation protects your face and gives it a smooth finish.

If you use a liquid foundation, you may want to apply a primer first so your “face” doesn’t rub off on yours or anyone else’s clothes!

I hope you enjoyed these tips, take care of your skin!
