At around 1:30 AM on Sunday morning, Death Row co-founder Marion ‘Suge’ Knight was shot six times in a pre-VMA party hosted by Chris Brown.
Gunfire erupted at the 1 OAK nightclub, based in West Hollywood, as Chris Brown was performing. Knight was shot six times, in the arm and stomach. The police scrambled to the scene, but they weren’t fast enough as the gunman escaped. As the club-goers vacated, they had to raise their hands as the police had drawn their guns towards the doors.
As for Knight, he walked out of the club despite his wounds, and was assisted into a police car. An ambulance soon came and took him to hospital, where he was rushed into ICU for surgery. The damage wasn’t fatal, and he is expected to live.
Two other people were also wounded, though they remain unidentified. There are rumors that the shooting was gang-related, since Knight has connections with the Bloods.
The night had started on a sour note, even before the gunman started shooting up the place. About 90 minutes before the incident, The Game had come to the club with his buddies, but they were denied entry. As you might expect, he was pissed, and there was soon a fight. The Game left, but his friends remained.
MTV later made it clear that they had no connection whatsoever to the incident. As for the party’s host, Chris Brown, he had this to say:
“It’s disappointing that we as a society can’t have fun or enjoy ourselves without any altercations sometimes. Miss me with the bullshit!!!”
Knight’s family, knowing a lot of people don’t think highly of him, defended the producer and asked for prayers for him. This isn’t the first time Knight has been shot in a club, though.
In August 2005, in another pre-VMA party, this time hosted by Kanye West, Knight was shot in the leg. It’s clear the rap mogul has had his fair share of brushes with death. It’s also clear that pre-VMA parties hosted by celebrities need better security.
