Due to an unexpected life change, a little under two months ago I found myself packing up my 2 bedroom townhome and moving to Northern VA, about 30 minutes from DC.
New job and a fresh start! Exciting but scary at the same time. Especially because I was picking up my life to move somewhere where I have no friends or close family.
In the short time I’ve been here I can already say that I’m pretty settled and happy!
Moves done, now what?!
Here are three things I learned that allowed me to settle down without the stress.
1. Learn the area!
I hope you have already done a little research on the lay of the land prior to moving but now that you’re here you have to get out and explore.
I recommend just going out, driving around and getting lost! No worries you have your GPS on your smartphone to fall back on.
Find nearby restaurants, grocery stores, gas stations etc. See anything interesting? Why don’t you stop in.
2. Don’t be a homebody, make friends!
As an introvert this was the toughest part for me. Fighting the urge to retreat back to my cozy apartment instead of getting out to meet people.
It is often said that it’s harder to make friends as an adult but this is so not true! My number one way to get out is via MeetUp. This site and app allows you to connect with locals in the area that have similar interests. Whether it be new in town, happy hour, prayer groups or just bloggers that want to connect!
I’ve joined a few and it gives me a good excuse to get out in DC, meet likeminded people and explore the city a little!
3. Pick up where you left off
Don’t let the change hinder your movement through life. Develop A New Life Routine. Join a new gym. Find a new church home. Find a new go to sushi spot. The list goes on.
Life is happening. Don’t let it pass you by just because you changed courses! Have you moved to a new city lately?
