The vicinity of the 142 Old Hope Road, Kingston 6 in the Liguanea was placed on high alert on April 1, 2015 when a lone white male threw an unidentified object and a backpack over the wall onto the property of the United States Embassy in Kingston Jamaica.
It is reported that the man’s action had quickly drawn the attention of the embassy’s security personnel and he was detained after putting up a spirited struggle. Members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and the Jamaica Defense Force (JDF) arrived on the scene in short order to shore up security outside the walls of the embassy. Witnesses also stated that US Marines could be seen guarding the building shortly after the scare.
The incident which occurred mid-morning has resulted in persons been kept at bay; as a result, persons who had received appointments for interviews or other legitimate business at the embassy were affected. In a press briefing Public affairs Officer at the US Embassy, Joshua Polocheck, reported that the embassy remains close to the public at this time but anticipates that it will be a temporary closure. He also stated that the suspect is being held by the Jamaican authorities and the embassy is working along with them in the investigations.
In a press briefing later in the afternoon, the police confirmed that the man is Caucasian with an American accent. They further revealed that nothing threatening was found in the suspicious items thrown across the wall. The man is being held for further questioning.
Well let’s look at this a little closely. Last month the government of Jamaica announced that President Obama is scheduled to visit the island on the eve of the Summit of the Americas to be held in Panama from the 10th to the 11th (of) April 2015. This announcement has also been prominently displayed on the embassy’s website.
With everything that has been going on with terror groups across the globe it would be downright arrogant bordering on foolish if the United States and the Jamaican governments didn’t test security measures in place. I totally suspect that this was some hush-hush operation to ensure that everything is in place for the President’s visit.
I could be wrong but it seems a little too peculiar to me that this would happen just days before the President’s arrival. On the other hand, the US has enemies all over the globe and someone might think it prudent to board a plane and come to the small island to see how best they might exploit the loopholes in our security system. (Remember that radical Muslim dude that was deported to Jamaica from the United Kingdom a few years ago?)
Let’s hope it is the former or at least an elaborate April fool’s day trick at the least, for if it is the other way around, that means someone has plans to blow the little Reggae island to Kingdom come in a bid to prolong the reign of terror gripping nations across the world. Here’s to hoping the President’s visit goes on without even so much as a whisper.
