We all know that NBC likes to dabble in classic musicals from time to time. When they did “Sound of Music” we were all very excited, they were recreating something we watched every Christmas when we were kids.
The problem is….it sucked! The whole thing just fell flat. This time NBC is remaking the classic 1978 musical The Wiz and personally I was not excited about it with their track record and all.
Well things have started to turn around for me, for one they hired Stephanie Mills who was in the original Broadway production to play Auntie Em and then they announced yesterday that Queen Latifah and Mary J Blige have signed on as major players in the show as well.
Queen Latifah will play the role of the Wiz who is described as:
“the mysterious and powerful wizard who holds the keys to the Emerald City, but whose metamorphosis from ordinary to extraordinary is itself a hoax. She rose to her lofty position after being transported by accident to Oz in a hot air balloon during a snowstorm.”
Mary J will play Evillene the Wicked Witch of the West, who “holds sway over the Winkies and the Winged Monkeys that do her bidding. She captures Dorothy and her friends to avenge the unintentional murder of her evil sister, Evvamean, and to get back the powerful silver slippers given to Dorothy by the Good Witch of the North.”
Now this is interesting if anything the ladies will get the support of there own following which includes me. I do not know one woman who isn’t a Latifah or Mary fan, which NBC might have a built in fan base for the show.
We love the choices, Latifah already has a few Broadway productions under her belt, like Chicago and Hair Spray, and she has worked with the producer before.
This will be different for Mary but Mary J Blige is no stranger to a show stopping performance. Now they just have to cast Dorothy, and that should be interesting!
