In the 21st century, it’s all about convenience and speed of deliverance. We’re addicted to instant gratification, and in most cases, to a major fault.

The microwave is one of these conveniences that we hold on to, even though we’ve heard circulating rumors of their harm. Maybe if you further understood what type of harm microwaves posed to you, then you would be more proactive about eliminating it from your life altogether.

If you’re like most people, you use the microwave to cook frozen foods, warm up preheated foods and even to melt ingredients like butter. But if you knew what the microwave was doing to your food, then you’d think twice about placing your food inside of one, or even consuming anything that came out of it.

How dangerous is a microwave really?

The amount of the harm a microwave can cause you is quite extensive. Studies upon studies have proven this, although we still continue to use them, thinking that they are safe.

For example, there was one study done by Dr. Magda Havas from Trent University, who stated that there were immediate and dramatic changes found in heart rates that were exposed to devices that generated microwaves, even at levels beneath the U.S. and Canada federal guidelines (0.3%)

Then there’s the bit about placing your food inside of a microwave and it killing majority of its nutrients. Multiple studies were done and they all concluded this fact.

Now, you may be thinking that all forms of heat reduce levels of nutrition, but not to the same extent as a microwave. Then to make matters even worse, the food is transformed into a substance that can lead to disease.

For instance, in two separate studies, it was found that up to 97% of antioxidants were eradicated from microwaved broccoli and between 60% and 90% of all microwaved foods had a significant decrease in vitamins B, C, E and other essential minerals.

Also, when prepared meats and grains are heated in a microwave, it causes cancer-causing agents to form, also known as carcinogens.

Then there are side effects that have been witnessed in people who have had too much exposure to radiation caused by devices like microwaves, which include dizziness, headaches, depression, irritability, nausea, appetite loss, eye problems, insomnia, extreme thirst, frequent urination, impaired cognition and night sweats.

Why does this happen?

Understanding how microwaves work will give you better insight into what they really are and what they’re really doing each time you turn it on.

As you may already know, they consist of electromagnetic radiation, which is a magnetic energy that moves through space. There are different types of electromagnetic waves, such as x-rays and gamma rays.

However, what you find in a microwave has a lower energy level, a level below radio waves.

When you turn on a microwave to heat up your food, dielectric heating is formed, which bounces around the oven and is absorbed by your food. The water molecules inside of your food begin to vibrate vigorously, which causes friction on a molecular level that warms up the food.

Most people believe that microwaves cook from the inside out, but is actually the opposite. When there is sufficient water in the food you put into the microwave, it isn’t able to heat properly, which is why sometimes it comes out not warmed or cooked all the way through.

The microwaves also causes the cell membranes to weaken and break. This neutralizes their electrical potentials, which impairs them and makes them vulnerable to fungi, viruses and other micro-organisms. Imagine eating food that is now accustomed to being infiltrated by diseases!

So to sum it up, when you microwave your food, the 1,000 or so watts radiates the contents, causes destruction and deformation of the food’s molecules and causes formations of new compounds that are foreign to nature. Not to mention, carcinogens.

I don’t know about you, but it doesn’t seem like what comes out of the microwave is anything near what you put into it. It’s like a science experiment gone wrong.

Living life without a microwave

I know this sounds impossible for a many people, but keep in mind that even if you aren’t using the microwave, anytime someone else does, that radiation is emitting into the air and still causing radiation to effect everything around it, including the food you have in nearby cabinets.

It’s not that hard to live without a microwave — you just have to grow accustomed to using your stove top and oven. You can also buy a mini oven to heat up small pot pies and such. You should time your meals accordingly so that it’s done when everyone will be ready to eat. Otherwise, keep it on the stove, so that you can rewarm it later on.

If you like to take your lunch to work, consider bringing things that don’t need to be warmed, like pita wraps, salad, sandwiches, nuts, chips and fruits.

You’ll see that heating up food in the oven and stove top isn’t hard at all and is actually pretty quick. Just keep an eye on it and stir the food, so that it doesn’t stick and burn (to those who are used to the set-it-and-forget-it motto of the microwave). You may even notice a difference in how you feel after you’ve chucked your microwave!
