Before you begin your coconut oil detox
The type of coconut oil you use is very important. You should look for a brand that sells it in an organic and raw state. It should also say extra virgin coconut oil on the label. This will ensure you’re getting the best quality oil, so you can reap the full benefits of coconut.
Just as with any detox, it’s highly necessary to drink plenty of water. This will help to flush out parasites, bacteria and other toxins hidden inside of your body. I like to say you should be drinking a gallon of water daily, which isn’t as hard to do as you may think. If you cut out all other drinks and reach for a glass of water instead, you can easily drink a gallon.
Since the coconut oil detox requires you to consume quite a lot, you may want to start off by first putting it into your food. This will help you to adjust to the taste and will enable your body to get used to it.
You can pour coconut oil over your meals — about 1 tsp worth, then work your way up to a couple of tablespoons. You should be doing this daily for atleast a week. Afterward, you can graduate to the actual coconut oil detox.
How to detox your body with coconut oil
You’ve got your oil and now you’re ready to get your coconut oil detox started, great! The process is very simple, but it does require commitment. All you have to do is mix together your extra virgin coconut oil with warm water and drink it. You should be doing this daily for up to a week.
Each day, you’ll need to get down between 10 and 14 tablespoons of coconut oil. Of course, you don’t have to do this all at once.
Just spread it out — every two hours, take 2 tablespoons of coconut oil with your water. This may sound a bit gross, which is why I have to recommend that you go with a brand like Spectrum or Nutiva, which to me tastes pretty great.
Another option is to place it inside of a hemp smoothie mixed with your favorite fruits and/or sweetener. It just has to be added in raw, uncooked form and best taken with something liquidy to ensure that you get all of it down. Make sure to avoid sugars during the detox. I enjoy borrowing recipes from the alkaline diet.
It’s also recommended that you eat the flesh of the coconut, which will also help to balance the flora in your gut. About 4 ounces should be enough. Make sure that it is unsweetened.
So that’s pretty much it. For me, it beats anything a doc can prescribe, and best of all there are no side effects. It’s a good idea to do this at least once a year just to maintain a balance of good and bad bacteria throughout your system, so don’t wait for trouble to hit home!
